Access demo near Diss station

19 September 2007

A demonstration was held outside Diss railway station on Tuesday to protest about poor pavement access.

There are no dropped curbs at the station approach, and the pavement is too narrow for wheelchairs to pass the ramp onto the platform. Wheelchair users currently have to access the station by wheeling up a road frequented by coal lorries and people in a hurry to catch trains.

Members and friends of the Diss Disability Issues and Social Support group held the demo as part of Action for Access - a week- long series of protests by members of the Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People. The aim is “to highlight the continuing discrimination endured by disabled people in Norfolk 12 years after the passage of the Disability Discrimination Act”.

There will be a further protest in Mere Street, Diss, at 10.30am tomorrow.

The Diss support group meets on Tuesday mornings at the Dennyholme Centre in the town. New members are always welcome. Contact Jeff Mantle 01953 718382 or Sally Wilson 01379 651608.
