A teenager has been suspended from school for wearing bracelets amid claims of "ridiculous" uniform rules.

Shannon Boyd, 15, was suspended from Long Stratton High School last Monday (September 11) when she refused to take her bracelets off.

Having refused isolation as it was not a "real reason to go", teachers suspended her until a meeting the following morning.

Since the introduction of a new headteacher uniform rules have become more strict.

Shannon's mother, Kerri Webster, said: "Teachers are standing at the gate with a box of black socks. If you turn up in anything but white socks, you have to change and collect yours in a bag at the end of the day.

"It's ridiculous.

"She refused to take her bands off which she has had on for two years. They know she has suspected ADHD and the reason she wears them is to distract her from drawing over herself and stuff.

"I thought this was the easier thing for her to have. It is a big deal to her to lose those which she has had on for so long.

"It is no different to wearing a watch - and most of the kids have smart watches now. They have simply said it doesn't conform with school policy."

Work was sent to be done from home but Ms Webster said it was not received until halfway through the afternoon.

Following a meeting with the headteacher and keen to get back into her art class, Shannon chose to wear a long-sleeve top to cover the bracelets rather than cut them off.

Ms Webster added: "I told them they need to start listening to the students.

"I agree 100pc with rules and policies but the punishments are too much and are affecting the students. They shouldn't feel like that and should just be enjoying their education."

Ms Webster claims other parents have also expressed concerns regarding strict uniform rules.

Long Stratton High School has been contacted for comment.
