An investigation into the unsolved killings of a Norfolk couple almost 40 years ago has been reopened by French authorities.

The bodies of Paul Bellion, 29, a craft teacher at Rosemary Musker High School in Thetford, and his 28-year-old fiancée Lorraine Glasby, who taught design technology at Diss High School, were found in a maize field in Brittany in October, 1986.

Despite a high-profile missing persons investigation, which began after the couple were last seen on August 16 and included EDP reporters covering nearby villages in posters, followed by a murder investigation, no progress was made and the case was closed in 1991.

Earlier this year, French website Le Parisien said a new cold case unit was being launched to review more than 200 unsolved cases.

Another report this weekend said they include the killings of Mr Bellion and Miss Glasby, who had been staying in a cottage in Cram-Chaban, in the Charente Maritime region, 200 miles from where they were found.

The couple were believed to have been on their way back to catch a ferry home from the port of St Malo when they disappeared.

It said the  cold case centre reopened the file on September 8, although it was not clear whether fresh evidence had emerged.

At the time, Mr Bellion's mother Elizabeth, then 75, told the EDP she and husband Douglas had advised the prosecutor to drop the case.

"The investigation has just gone on and on," she said. "None of it can bring our son back. After 20 years of hurt and stress we now want some peace.

"That they haven't found anyone after all this time is hugely disappointing. I don't think the French investigators have done all they can - I know they think they're doing their job but they haven't even found the bikes."
