These under-the-radar fish and chip shops in Norfolk deserve award recognition for their tasty take on the classic British dish.

1. Unthank Fish and Chips 

Where: 131 Unthank Road, Norwich, NR2 2PF

This Golden Triangle takeaway is one of Norwich's best chippies and the fish is cooked fresh to order. 

What it lacks in fancy decor it more than makes up for with its top-notch food and the owner has built up a great rapport with his regulars.

2. New Sole Plaice

Where: 27 Suffolk Square, Vauxhall Street, Norwich, NR2 2AA 

Another Norwich gem, New Sole Plaice is rated one of the best places to eat in the city on Tripadvisor.

This is down to the hard work of the friendly owners and husband-and-wife frying team, Ben Gan and Eliz Loo.

3. Holt Fish Bar

Where: 11 Shirehall Plain, Holt, NR25 6HT

Holt Fish Bar has been owned by three generations of the same family for more than 50 years.  

Run by Martin Garrard since 2018, it offers a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options alongside its traditional fare and also a range of Lebanese dishes.

4. Mr Chips 

Where: 65 High Street, Gorleston, NR31 6RQ

Mr Chips has glowing reviews on Tripadvisor, with customers praising the quality, portion sizes and value for money. 

There are also several seats inside if you want to dine in with your traditional fish and chips.

5. Baileys Fish & Chips

68 Shelfanger Road, Diss, IP22 4EH

This south Norfolk chippy serves all the favourites you would expect, including fish, sausages, pies, chicken and children's meals.

Owner Cengiz Bolat is also a real community champion and this includes offering free meals on Christmas Day so that no one eats alone.

6. Drifters Fish & Chips

Where: 20 Oak Street, Fakenham, NR21 9DY

Located inside a Grade II-listed building in Fakenham, tuck into traditional fish and chips at this restaurant and takeaway, which also offers delivery.

Owner Andrew Felton is also the new leaseholder of the Red Lion Lounge bar and restaurant in the town centre.

7. Dave's Fish Bar 

Where: 7-11 Co-Operative Street, Sheringham, NR26 8DX

This takeaway and restaurant, located just off the High Street, is the perfect pitstop on a day at the seaside.

The traditional chippy is also very family-friendly and it has a colourful interior with cartoon crabs and fish on the walls.
