A man arrested over an assault during an under-13s football match which left a referee in hospital remains under investigation.

The game between Diss Town U13s and Spixworth U13s was abandoned on December 10 last year and an investigation launched by the Norfolk County Football Association.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was reportedly taken to hospital with serious facial injuries after an incident involving a spectator.

Norfolk Police were called to Bressingham playing fields and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of assault but no charge has followed so far.

A police spokesman said the matter "remains under investigation".

The man was initially taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre but was later released.

Spixworth Youth FC took to social media to condemn the actions of the spectator, saying they were "disgusted" by what had happened.

However, their U13s team have since been unable to play as all of their fixtures were postponed by the Norfolk Combined Youth Football League amid the investigations.
