The A140 runs from the A14 near Needham Market in Suffolk up to the A149 south of Cromer and there are plenty of great pitstops along the way. 

These are some of the best restaurants to visit along the Norfolk stretch of the major road.

1. The Old Ram Coaching Inn, Tivetshall St Mary

This charming inn, which once featured on Channel 4's Four in a Bed, is packed with character and it dates back to the 17th century. 

It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week and there is a focus on local ingredients and produce, which includes a partnership with Intwood Farm near Cringleford.

2. Goodies Food Hall Restaurant, Pulham Market

Just a stone's throw from the A140, this award-winning food hall is packed with East Anglian produce and it also features a butchery, bakery and deli counter.

The restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch and a two-course set menu is available on weekdays, with a main and dessert for £23pp.

3. Huggers, Long Stratton

A historic building that had fallen into disrepair was taken on and lovingly restored into a café bistro in 2022. 

It serves a plant-based menu and its afternoon tea and Sunday roasts are especially popular with customers.

4. Netherton Steakhouse, Long Stratton

Also in Long Stratton and along the A140 is the Netherton Steakhouse pub and restaurant, with historic features such as 17th-century beams and an Edwardian high ceiling with chandeliers. 

Alongside a range of steak cuts, there are also burgers and plenty of specials, with roasts served from midday on Sundays.

5. Duke of Delhi, Saxlingham Thorpe

This Indian takeaway and restaurant has hundreds of glowing reviews across various platforms.

Their house specialties include duck, seabass and salmon dishes and there are also lots of vegetarian options.

6. SugarBeat Eating House, Swainsthorpe

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the SugarBeat Eating House, which also features four cosy bedrooms that have been newly renovated. 

The main menu includes steak frites, confit duck leg and a vegetarian Jalfrezi curry.

7. The Marsh Harrier, Norwich

This pub and restaurant on the outskirts of Norwich has a country feel with fires and exposed beams.

It is part of the Vintage Inns group and you can expect classic pub fare and seasonal specials.

8. The Fox Steakhouse & Grill, Hevingham

Heading north of Norwich, The Fox along the A140 is a family-friendly dining spot serving flame-grilled steaks, burgers, pizzas and much more. 

It also offers light lunches from Monday to Saturday, Sunday roasts and a 'Fox Cub' children's menu.

9. The Plough Inn, Marsham 

The Plough Inn in Marsham, near Aylsham, has just undergone an extensive £120,000 refurbishment, which has transformed both the pub and accommodation. 

There is a new bar and other changes include a laminate floor throughout, fresh furniture and a dark green colour scheme.

The kitchen, led by head chef Dan Harding, has also been renovated and the new menu includes burgers, stone-baked pizzas, chicken katsu and 'dirty' fries.
