With the closure of RAF Mildenhall confirmed, the question business leaders and councils are now asking is - what next for the site?

A commercial airport, aerospace engineering site, business park and housing estate have all been floated as ideas.

The EDP would like to know what you think should be done with the base once its doors shut some time before 2020.

Closure of RAF Mildenhall will be a major blow to our region

  • Since when was Mildenhall in Norfolk? It will be mothballed by the MOD against the eventuality of Scottish independence and loss of bases there.Since Lakenheath is getting a whole new bunch of planes in a few years time it is unlikely to be considered suitable for civil use. I mean, have you seen how the planes stack around Ely cathedral and thereabouts?

  • Why would it be anything other than mothballed by the government against future use? Since Lakenheath is going to be flying their new planes in 5 years time hardly the place for extra housing nor civil aviation.

  • Also Norfolk would have 2 local circuits, Snetterton and Mildenhall.

  • Definitely should be a track then the British superbikes won't have to do assen as they could do this circuit. I think this place as a circuit could have potential.

  • It doesn't matter what anyone thinks. The developers are already circling like the vultures they are.

  • It will end up like Coltishall....useless and derelict. Mainly due to local opposition to any plans that may affect the price of their houses and the refusal of some to accept it's no longer an operational airbase and never will be again.

  • Maybe a airport would be ideal as people come from far just to view aircraft. I think this area lacks day entertainment like a theme park etc you have to travel miles for the nearest one and I think it would be nice to keep it American themed. Have it honour all the military & staff that have worked there over the years
