A date has been set for the opening of a new Aldi store at the site of a town’s former Co-Operative supermarket.

The Diss branch of the discount retailer is set to open in Mere Street on November 27, eight months after the Co-op store, which had been trading since 2009, closed with the loss of 37 jobs.

An Aldi spokesman said the chain would be looking to recruit staff from the local area and planned to announce details of job vacancies closer to the opening date.

She added: “The new store is part of our expansion strategy to help meet Aldi’s growing customer demand across the UK.

“To celebrate the opening of the new store, we will be hosting an event for members of the local community to attend. Further details about this will be revealed at a later stage.”

Changes are being made to the premises to prepare for the opening, including a 42sqm extension providing a dedicated service ramp and loading point away from the rest of the car park.

In total, the newly refurbished premises will provide a 1,484sqm foodstore, with 938sqm of retail space, 309sqm of storage space and 204sqm of office space.

A new glazed shop front will face onto Park Road, with a glazed door and canopy facing the car park.

The size of the parking spaces is also increasing, with 70 spaces in total, including four disabled designated parking spaces and three parent and child spaces, while cycle storage spaces are being introduced.

The Co-op was looking to either re-deploy its 37 staff within the company or help them find alternative employment.
