A town centre bank in Harleston has shut its doors for the final time, despite a petition and lobbying by local councillors against its closure.

The HSBC branch in Market Place was closed on April 20 after the bank blamed declining footfall for the decision.

A spokesman for the bank said the nearest branches for customers were at Diss, Halesworth and Beccles.

The ATM machine will also be removed and the town centre building will be put on the market for sale, said the spokesman.

A petition against the closure had been established, which attracted more than 400 signatures and Harleston Town Councillors wrote to HSBC to express their “dismay” at the closure of the branch.
