The final countdown has begun for the return of a popular Norfolk airshow, which will star two famous second world war aircraft.
Organisers of the Old Buckenham Airshow are hoping that up to 5,000 people will descend on the former American airforce base next weekend, which promises a packed programme of vintage flying displays and family fun.
The highlight of the airshow, which takes place on Sunday, June 24, will be the visit of the Spitfire and Mustang Duo, from the Duxford-based Old Flying Machine Company.
Matt Wilkins, airfield manager, said the duo were a “world-class” booking and were sure to draw the crowds.
“We have three times the number of advanced sales than previous years. We have had to create a second classic car display and there will be vintage agricultural machinery, one acre of fairground and 150 military vehicles. There will be something for everyone,” he said.
The return of the airshow, which did not take place last year, follows a change of management at the former second world war airfield at Old Buckenham.
The new-look show, which is sponsored by the EDP, will continue to raise funds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.
Other aerial displays will come from the first world war dog fighting show, The Great War Display, the Antonov AN2, and Wildcat Aerobatics in their Pitts biplanes.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXB MH434 was originally tested by Alex Henshaw, a record breaking pilot in pre war days and flew 79 operational sorties during her military career.
Ferocious Frankie, the North American Mustang P51-D, served at various airfields in England during the war, before being operated by the Royal Canadian Airforce until 1957. She has starred in Memphis Belle, Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan, Sam’s Circus and Hart’s War.
The main sponsor of the event is SG Wealth Management Ltd.
The gates will open at 10am with flying starting from 1pm. For more information, visit www.oldbuckenhamairshow.co.uk
