A Norwich-born theatre producer has won an Olivier Award for a brutal drama about human trafficking.

Thirty-eight-year-old Richard Jordan, who is originally from Cringleford, co-produced Roadkill for the Theatre Royal Stratford East and the Barbican.

The play won the Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre Olivier Award at last night’s Olivier Award ceremony.

Based on real experiences, the show shared the harrowing details of a young woman trapped in a living nightmare. Beginning and ending at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, Roadkill took audiences away from the safety of a theatre auditorium on a minibus journey into East London to tell its story.

When Mr Jordan, a former Hethersett High School student, heard the show was nominated, he had said: “When I was a kid growing up in Norwich, I used to watch the Olivier Awards on television. It’s very special to be part of that.”

Mr Jordan, a patron of Norwich Playhouse, has worked on more than 160 productions since setting up his own production company in 1998. He began his career as a stagehand on the West End musical Cats and was once a production assistant for Norwich Theatre Royal chief executive Peter Wilson’s production company.
