Plans for 350 homes off Norwich Common, Wymondham, set to be discussed for a third time

14:06 16 June 2012

Plans for 350 new homes between Wymondham and Hethersett will come before decision-makers for a third time.

A South Norfolk Council planning committee unanimously rejected proposals for up to 350 houses off Norwich Common in Wymondham last year after approving the same scheme three months earlier.

However, the plans by Landstock Estates Ltd and Landowners will go before district councillors at a specially arranged meeting on Friday after the developer appealed the most recent planning decision at the site known as Carpenters Barn, which is set to go before an inquiry next month.

Members of the authority’s planning committee turned down the proposals over concerns about the erosion of the greenfield gap between Wymondham and Hethersett.

Planning officers at the council are recommending approval of the homes scheme because there is a shortage of land being brought forward for development across the Norwich area. The government’s new National Planning Policy Framework has also been published with a presumption in favour of sustainable development and a greater emphasis on meeting the five year land supply.

South Norfolk Council had reconsidered its original decision in favour of the Carpenters Barn development following rulings by Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, who had rejected applications, despite a land supply deficit.

A spokesman for the council said that if approved, the scheme would go towards the 2,200 new homes earmarked for the town over the next 14 years.

However, the district council’s Wymondham Area Action Plan identifying preferred sites for development up until 2026 has not yet been completed.
