Keepers at Banham Zoo are celebrating their first Suffolk Punch birth of the year.

The rare-breed foal, named ‘Bazoo York’ was born on May 17 to seven-year-old ‘Bazoo Roxanne’, who was also born at the zoo.

Each year just 40 to 50 Suffolk Punch foals are born, and the new arrival at Banham is the 12th to be born this year and believed to be the first registered in Norfolk in 2012.

A spokesman for the zoo that this is Roxanne’s second foal and both mother and foal are doing well and will go on show to visitors at the zoo from the middle of June.

The Suffolk Punch horse is the oldest breed of heavy horse in Great Britain. The breed dates at least into the 16th century and all trace their male lines back to one stallion.

The Suffolk heavy horse once numbered in their thousands, and was a common sight on farms throughout East Anglia, but now there are currently just 480 pure bred Suffolks registered with the Suffolk Horse Society which manages the stud book for the breed.
