As someone with a sweet tooth, I was overjoyed at the prospect of having various different cheesecakes laid out before me, waiting to be tucked into, but only one could be crowned the creamy champion. Here’s a look at the results:

Marks and Spencer New York Vanilla Cheesecake, 1kg, £4

In terms of taste, this cheesecake was the best by far, sweet and creamy with a strong Madagascan vanilla flavour. It looked great and I particularly enjoyed that you could see the vanilla seeds within the generous cheesecake layer. The only reason this didn’t receive full marks is that it was so rich, I couldn’t manage more than a few mouthfuls, despite wishing I could devour the entire thing.

Gu York Cheesecake, 2 x 80g pots, £3

This cheesecake certainly stood out from the crowd, with a spiced biscuit base that gave it a unique taste, reminiscent of Biscoff cookies. This hint of spice perfectly compliments the creamy vanilla layer, which is also sprinkled with a little biscuit crumb. The dessert comes in a good sized individual ramekin, which is just enough to satisfy sweet cravings, however considering the cost is the same as a large cheesecake, they are a little pricey, but I suppose it’s a case of quality over quantity.

Score: 8/10

Sainsbury’s New York Cheesecake, 600g, £3.50

An all round good dessert, with top marks for appearance and cheese to biscuit ratio. The cheesecake is smooth and creamy, leaving you wondering whether you’re actually eating a thick mousse.

Score: 8/10

Tesco Vanilla Cheesecake, 540g, £3
A good sized dessert, ideal for sharing, this is recommended for six but could easily serve eight. Topped with a dusting of powdered sugar, Tesco’s cheesecake was satisfactory, with a smooth, creamy texture and thick biscuit base. The only downside to this cheesecake was the mild flavour, which didn’t pack the vanilla punch I was hoping for.

Score: 6/10

Morrisons Market Street Vanilla Cheesecake, 550g, £3

Straight off the bat the Morrisons Market Street cheesecake didn’t look quite as appetising as the others that were sampled, with no decoration or garnish on top, leaving only a slightly oily looking finish. As desserts go, this was quite bland and left a strange aftertaste.

Score 4/10

  • I agree, why miss out on the other commentator's aforementioned retailers? Also, why isn't Asda featured. I will, however, being trying the M&S one as it is Archie's recommended cheesecake, and what's good for Archant, is good for this gal.
