Mitch Goose gets faster and faster!
A week ago, the USA-based City of Norwich AC athlete created a new lifetime best over 3000m when competing indoors in Seattle – his time of 7min 51.75secs placing him fourth on the UK ranking list.
On Saturday, the Armory Track and Field Centre, New York was the stage for his latest exploit. Competing in the indoor mile, an event in which he had not previously posted a time, he as a consequence found himself in a slower graded race.
Unfazed, he took off from the gun and continued to open the gap on his fellow competitors. Mid-race the capacity crowd got behind Goose, urging him onto greater effort.
He duly obliged, going on to lap a number of competitors before crossing the line over 20 seconds ahead of his nearest rival to record a time of 3min 59.26secs.
Two hours later he was back on the track helping Iona University to take the honours in the Medley Relay. Running the 1600m leg he posted a time of 4min 07secs to round off an impressive day’s work.
In the space of less than two weeks, Mitch has rewritten the Norfolk record books.
Former international star Mike Tagg has held the Norfolk 3000m record since 1971, whe he recorded 7m 54.0secs in Edinburgh.
GB international David Heath’s 3min 59.36scs was the mile record time, set in Belfast in 1989.
Both records, held by two of Norfolk’s finest athletes, had stood for some considerable time – so it is to Mitch’s credit that he has been able to create new figures at this early stage in his senior career.
His next race comes in three weeks time in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Indoor Championships in a quality field over 3000m. “It will be by far my toughest challenge to date,” he said. “But I am looking forward to mixing it with the very best”.
