Lowestoft Town director of football Craig Fleming believes Lubo Guentchev is close to rediscovering the form that made him the talk of the Ryman League Premier Division earlier this season.

The Bulgarian hit an injury-time winner to settle the Suffolk derby against Bury Town on Saturday and keep Lowestoft’s hopes of automatic promotion alive.

Guentchev looks to be hitting form at just the right time after a mystery virus earlier this campaign saw him struggle to scale the heights he attained earlier this season.

However, Fleming insists the former Hendon man can play a crucial role in the last four games of the season and any potential play-off matches.

“I was delighted for Lubo to get the goal – he has worked hard for that. He came to us last season and was brilliant towards and he carried that form on into the next.

“However, he was quite ill and it was a real worry for him at the time. It affected his form and he wasn’t producing what he is capable of.

“We took him out of the firing line and have been trying to introduce him back into it and it is paying dividends – he looks to be getting back to where he was, which is great news for him and us.”

The three points were particularly welcome for the Trawlerboys after a disappointing 2-2 draw against lowly Leatherhead last Saturday.

The management team demanded a response from their players and they delivered, culminating in Guentchev’s winner after earlier goals from Dean Sinclair and Sam Gaughran had twice pegged Bury back.

Fleming stressed the importance of maintaining positive mindset in the end of season run-in and believes there could yet be more drama in the title race.

“I’ve tried to talk to people around the club about the importance of maintaining a positive outlook,” he added.

“I don’t expect people to look at our peformances through rose-tinted glasses – we know the performance against Leatherhead wasn’t good enough.

“But everyone connected with the club has got to realise that staying positive can only help – we’re still in a good position.”

“I’m not just talking about supporters; I’m talking about the players, the management team and the committee as well - we are all in it together and to stay on this upward curve we mustn’t get too down on ourselves.”
