New-look Diss Town side suffer disappointing home defeat

Diss Town introduced two new signings in Anton O’Donoghue from Team Bury and Cory Gittens from Stowmarket in a much changed line-up.

Cornard’s recent form has been improved from the early part of the season, having changed managers in mid-October, and they were convincing winners as Diss put in a weak performance in a game that they clearly expected to win.

Cornard had the better of the opening exchanges in this Thurlow Nunn League Division One game but goalkeeper Matt Grove made the first stop when he saved from Nuno Nogueira after an 18th minute corner. Lewis Cooke had a reasonable chance for the Tangerines three minutes later but scuffed his shot wide of the left hand post after running clear on to a pass from Nogueira.

In the last 10 minutes of the first half Jake Hayhoe was called upon to make to a couple of good saves, but on the stroke of half-time Cornard took the lead, Luke Payne beating Hayhoe with a well-struck shot.

A half-time reorganisation by the Tangerines didn’t work and within 10 minutes of the restart they were 3-0 down. In the 52nd minute a bouncing shot from Lee Kidger was pushed away by Hayhoe, but Payne smashed the loose ball high into the roof of the net from an acute angle.

Three minutes later a free-kick from the left was played deep to the far post and the ball was played back for Reece Keating to shoot in despite Tom Ramsay’s attempt to block the ball on the line.

Diss had more of the efforts in the last quarter of the game, starting with a header from Ramsay which was inches high but they were unable to get a goal which may have raised hopes of a fightback. Substitute Will Goulding forced Grove to make two saves inside the last 15 minutes, from an 18 yard shot after Goulding ran on to a through ball from Ramsay and then from a fine shot on the turn.

Diss Town: Hayhoe, O’Donoghue, Riches, Tipple, Ramsay, Vincent, Andriuskevicius, Gittens, Cooke, Nogueira, Beeston. Subs: Malin (Gittens 61), Lambe, Riches, Fena (O’Donoghue), Goulding (Andriuskevicius 68). Attendance: 79.

Diss Town are at away at Team Bury on Saturday (3pm). There is a local derby match against Debenham LC at Brewers Green Lane on Boxing Day (11am).
