Train passengers faced a morning of misery yesterday after a broken rail caused chaos on the line between Norwich and London Liverpool Street.

The broken rail at Marks Tey, near Colchester, caused delays from 6.30am onwards, and a replacement bus service was put into operation between Chelmsford and Witham.

The rail, on the Norwich-bound track, was repaired and services returned to normal during late morning.

There were also some delays yesterday afternoon following the activation of a fire alarm in signal box at Colchester. A spokesman for One Railway said a small number of trains had been delayed for about 20 minutes and apologised for any inconvenience to passengers caused by both incidents.
