Pancake Day came early in Diss as families were invited to pit their flipping skills against each other in a series of races yesterday.

Men's, women's, children's and team pancake races took place on Fair Green with proceeds going towards the refurbishment of the picturesque spot's children's playground.

Those crossing the line first received prizes from local business sponsors, including 25 shopping and hairdressing vouchers.

A raffle was also held with the lucky winner going home with a pancake-making kit full of ingredients and kitchen utensils.

The event was organised by the Fair Green Neighbourhood Association who became responsible for the management of the historic green last year after signing a lease with the new owner following its sale by the Diss Parochial Charity.

Association chairman Rachel Baker said the inaugural race day had been well attended and pledged that it would return next year.

'I think it went really well. It's been a lot of fun,' she said.

'We have always had a community spirit down here but this definitely builds on that spirit.'

The group's next event will be a traditional fete on Friday, April 29 in honour of the Royal Wedding.

From 2pm children will be able to enjoy a small fun fair and Punch and Judy shows, while neighbouring pub The Cock Inn will supply a hog roast and live music.
