As the nation prepares to celebrate the King's coronation, special memories have emerged of a Norfolk woman's experience of the Queen's ascent to the throne in 1953.
Ahead of the May 6 celebrations, Tim Dye was reminded of a letter he had inherited from his aunt.
Jeanne Sutton, from Long Stratton, made the trip down to London 70 years ago with a close friend to catch a glimpse of the glitz and glamour of the most prodigious royal spectacle for generations.
Tim, from Coltishall, has kept hold of the handwritten account of June 2, 1953, that his aunt penned after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Watched by over 27 million people on television in the UK alone, the royal event was one of the world's first major events to be broadcast.
Jeanne was among over three million people who gathered to watch as the royal procession wound its way from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace.
Tim, 70, who grew up in Poringland, said the letter was written by Jeanne to send to her aunt a week after her return from London.
It recalls having left at 9pm the day before to ensure a good view and describes the wild crowds on the morning of the coronation.
She wrote: “Once the crowds got bigger, we couldn’t move away as we wouldn’t be able to find our way back.
"I felt faint twice – but it soon passed.
“The precession passed us at about 3.20pm and there were only two small ladies in front of me, so I had a wonderful view.
"Particularly of those on our side of the carriages; the Duke of Edinburgh was on our side, Princess Margaret, Princess Alexandria – it was all worth the long wait.”
Almost 24 hours after leaving Long Stratton, Jeanne returned home to attend a coronation party at the village hall.
Now, 70 years on, her nephew intends to celebrate at home with his wife and "a couple of glasses of Champagne".
