New safety measures for Norfolk towns and villages

Norfolk County Council has agreed to make money available which will be spent on 118 highways schemes, including vehicle-activated speed signs, bus shelters and new footpaths.

County Hall's Conservative-controlled cabinet agreed to the changes on Monday, through its long-running parish partnership initiative.

First launched in September 2011, the scheme invites communities to bid for cash to make much-needed improvements.

The county council will put in nearly £470,000 and the Safety Camera Partnership will provide £44,000.

Town and parish councils will then match fund that money to pay the remaining cost of all the schemes - a contribution of about £485,000.

Eric Vardy, cabinet member for environment and waste, said the scheme was hugely important to parish councils.

He said: "They see this as a lifeline. They see that someone is listening out there and wants to help, heeding their needs in the community."

Alison Thomas, cabinet member for adult social care, said: "It can be something smaller, or part of a much bigger project. I really welcome this."

Leader Kay Mason Billig said it was "great to see such a great long list".

Schemes include:

• 26 village gateways, where signs and road markings remind drivers they are entering an area where they ought to slow down and pay extra attention;
• 21 SAM2 cameras - signs activated by vehicles to flash up a message to slow down;
• 14 'trod' footpaths. A trod footpath is a low-cost footway, often made using recycled road surface material;
• 10 bus shelters.

Among the towns and villages where improvements will be made are Sheringham, Dereham, Aylsham, Loddon, Thetford, Salhouse, Stoke Ferry, Watton, Wroxham, Scarning and Potter Heigham.
