A new GP surgery is set for a Norfolk town as part of a multi-million-pound investment amid a "shortage of doctor's appointments".

South Norfolk Council has agreed to fund the project after pledging to invest £16 million into planning and development schemes in Diss.

The wider investment will also include the funding of a new, state-of-the-art leisure centre, improvements to the current swimming pool and upgrades to the town's bus station.

South Norfolk Diss and Roydon councillor Graham Minshull said: "People in Diss say all the time that they're having trouble getting a doctor's appointment."

"After years we've finally managed to get funding for a new doctor's surgery which will be part of the £16million going into Diss in the next three years."

"The opportunity came along where South Norfolk Council were in a fortunate position, with money to invest and money to spend, and we pushed for it to be spent on upgrading facilities."

An Aldi store planning application has been approved to be built on the south side of Park Road.

"It's great news for the town" Cllr Minshull added, "I'm really pleased.

"The money's in place and now we're just waiting for planning permission and discussions about building specifications to go ahead for the new doctor's surgery."
