Emergency services were called after a two vehicle crash at a notorious crossroads on the A140 in which two people had been injured.

Ambulance services were called at around 4.30pm on Wednesday (December 14) to the crash between a Mercedes and a Range Rover at the Hempnall junction between Long Stratton and Tasburgh.

A police spokesman said at 4.50pm the road was blocked and traffic had been directed by police with diversions in place..

The spokesman added that one of the drivers received treatment from ambulance services but none of the injuries were considered life threatening or changing. The other driver received minor injuries.

The Highways Agency had been informed and two Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service crews from Carrow and Earlham were also at the scene to assist police and make the area safe.

The collision caused extensive to rush hour traffic in both directions on the A140 with lengthy tailbacks queuing through Newton Flotman and Long Stratton. The knock on effect of diverted traffic and motorists seeking to avoid the area left to congestion on a number of smaller back roads.

The A140/B1527 crossroads at Hempnall is a notorious accident blackspot that has seen more than a dozen serious accidents in the past five years. A £4.4m project from Norfolk County Council to build a roundabout designed to improve congestion and safety at the crossroads is currently in the planning stages.
