Archant

The RAF’s newest jet might not have made an appearance on Tuesday. But there have been plenty of other aircraft flying over parts of Norfolk.

They include A Voyager flying tanker, C17 Globemaster transport plane, Typhoon fighters and Tornado GR4s. So what’s the lowdown?

An RAF spokesman said the aircraft were practising formation flying for the Queen’s Birthday Flypast over Buckingham Palace on Saturday.

Aircraft rendezvous over the north Sea, before flying inland at Southwold, overhead RAF Marham and on to RAF Coningsby, Lincs, where they disperse.

Last year 29 aircraft of 15 different types, from eight RAF bases flew over the palace. This year’s flypast will be the last to feature Tornados from Marham.

Next year, their place will be taken by the new F-35 Lightning.
