Villagers spearheading the restoration of one of Norfolk most historic former schools are selling commemorative first day cover British stamps relating to the famous R34 airship.

Villagers spearheading the restoration of one of south Norfolk's most historic school buildings are selling commem-orative first-day-cover British stamps relating to the R34 airship.

Specially-produced Pennoyer's mugs and airship books are also on offer.

And every penny raised is for the Pennoyer's Restoration Fund, to transform the redundant school and medieval guild chapel at Pulham St Mary into a centre for the local community.

The village is renowned for its former airship station, where the R34 airship landed after completing the first double Atlantic crossing in July 1919.

Project spokeswoman Sheila King suggested that the items being offered would make ideal presents.

"Why not buy them a Pennoyer's mug from which to sip their tea, whilst admiring a first-day cover comm-emorating a historic event in Pulham St Mary? Let's face it, they won't get two!" she added.

"The Pennoyer's mug is available in any colour you like as long as it's navy blue. It has the Pennoyer's 'heart of Pulham St Mary' strapline on both sides and it's good value for money at £3.95 each."

The first-day covers have been given to the Pennoyer's project, which received national coverage on the BBC TV programme, Restoration Village. They include a 60th anniversary issue which is becoming quite rare and difficult to find, and a commemorative issue of Major Scott, who was the R34's captain. These are on sale from £5 each, while the books range in price from £10 to £25.

"Most of these are now out of print, so you'll be making an investment," said Mrs King.
