Historic Wymondham railway station has scooped a prestigious national award - following hot on the heels of its recent success in the Anglia in Bloom competition.

At the 2008 Community Rail Awards, Wymondham was voted the 'Best Station Retail Outlet', adding to its glittering tally of national and regional awards.

The latest accolade reflects the work of National Express East Anglia in introducing a new ticket office and part-time staff at the station in recent years, and that of Wymondham businessman David Turner in the development of his Brief Encounter café.

Mr Turner has developed a sustainable business at the station, offering a range of food and drink in an atmosphere that is truly nostalgic and comfortable. The judges were also impressed with the other improvements at the station including information provision and station presentation.

The station's high standards were also reflected in its being voted 'Best Station' in the Anglia in Bloom awards earlier this month.

Andrew Goodrum, business director of National Express East Anglia, said: “Wymondham station is a jewel in the crown of our network. I am delighted that David Turner and the team have received this recognition.

“The award reflects our deep-seated commitment to investing in stations and to creating sustainable local train services. The success of Wymondham station shows that rural stations can be vibrant, flourishing places at the heart of the communities they serve.”
