Police have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run crash on Christmas Eve that killed a Norfolk woman as she walked to church.

A 37-year-old man handed himself in to Diss Police Station yesterday evening following several days of appeals for information.

Katherine Aldridge, 67, died in hospital on Christmas Day after suffering a serious head injury when she was struck by a reversing vehicle.

The car failed to stop after the incident, but descriptions were given to police, who appealed for those involved to come forward.

The crash occurred on North Green Road at around 6pm on Thursday, just 100 metres from the church.

Mother of two, Mrs Aldridge, was described as a popular community figure by Rev Norman Steer of Pulham St Mary the Virgin.

He said Mrs Aldridge and her husband, Michael, were dedicated members of the congregation and the whole village was shocked by the tragedy.

'She was never at the forefront, but was always working hard for people and the church. She was a very generous lady and she always had a smile for anyone. Everyone would talk about her warmth and kindness,' he said.

The Rev Steer said 16 family members and friends attended a special communion at the church in Pulham St Mary on Saturday.

'They are shocked by it and will miss her tremendously,' he said.

The arrested man has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
