Grace Fraser, a 10-year-old pupil from Palgrave Primary School, won the first prize for her age group in the regional competition run by Suffolk County Council as part of the national Gypsy Roma Traveller History month in June.

The purpose of the competition is to promote community cohesion and create greater awareness of the achievements of the travelling communities, by encouraging schoolchildren of all ages to learn about the history and culture of this significant minority in both the UK and the rest of Europe.

Grace was presented with £50 worth of book vouchers for her school plus a £15 book token for herself at Endeavour House in Ipswich. Head teacher Angela Hall said: “Congratulations to Grace on her success. The pupils had fun creating posters to celebrate the history and culture of travellers and also learned something of their past, their achievements and the discrimination they sometimes suffer. This type of activity enriches the curriculum and helps to provide the broad education that is so important to young children.”
