One of the region's leading youth bands will be visiting a village devastated by a tsunami during a tour of the Far East. After months of fundraising, the 51 members of the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band will leave Diss on Thursday for at trip that is costing them about £25,000 in total.

After months of fundraising, the 51 members of the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band will leave Diss on Thursday for at trip that is costing them about £25,000 in total.
As well as visiting Singapore and Borneo, the band will be going to Ban Naam Kem in Thailand to give a concert in the village's new community centre.
Half the population perished and 95 per cent of the village was wiped out by the tsunami in 2004. The band's founder and current musical director, Mike Booty, immediately set about organising a concert to raise money for the recovery operation, with the help of Diss Rotary Club. Performed only a few weeks after the disaster, it raised more than £1,500.
