Senior cadets from the Diss and Long Stratton detachments of the Army Cadet Force visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire, as part of their Cadet In The Community award.
The Arboretum has over 150 remembrance memorials, not all of them dedicated to the armed forces but at its heart is the National Memorial which was opened by the Queen in October last year.
The visit was particularly poignant for Sgt Stewart Crofts who was able to find the name of one of his best friends, L/Cpl Nick Stokes, who died in 1992 in a training accident while serving in Cyprus.
Stewart, who is commander of the Diss detachment and instructs at Long Stratton, turned what was to have been a private visit into a trip for the cadets at the suggestion of his wife.
Twelve senior cadets and five adult instructors spent the day fact finding for individual projects as well as carrying out prescribed tasks.
As both Diss and Long Stratton detachments are affiliated to the Royal Engineers the group went to Royal Engineers Memorial.
