VILLAGERS in Old Buckenham have been given a 10,000 boost to their project to revamp their village hall.

The cash will go towards a 35,000 project to renew the hall's kitchen.

It was granted by Breckland Council's cabinet on Tuesday morning in front of members of the village hall committee.

The village hall committee asked for the cash because current equipment in the kitchen is not up to health and safety standards, a report to the cabinet said.

The upgrade project will see the kitchen and bar area amalgamated, new equipment including cookers, sinks, a new floor, ceiling and walls.

The electrical supply will also be updated and modern hand washing and cleaning facilities will be installed.

Tuesday's cabinet heard that it is a popular hall with a WI group, beavers, indoor bowls and more.

Especially important was the luncheon club, which without a new kitchen was at risk of not being able to function.

A large proportion of the villagers were pensioners, at 22pc, the cabinet heard, and 17pc didn't have transport.

The group was congratulated on raising one third of the cash needed for the work in the village itself.

Match funding has been donated by local organisations and an application made to the Big Lottery fund and Norfolk Community Foundation.
