A public meeting is to be held at Wymondham next week to discuss plans to create a permanent gipsy and travellers site on the outskirts of the town. A public meeting is to be held at Wymondham next week to discuss plans to create a permanent gipsy and travellers site on the outskirts of the town.

South Norfolk Council is consulting on plans to create three additional gipsy and traveller bases in the district with easy access to the A11, A47 and A143, each providing up to eight pitches, and has put forward six preferred and reserve sites - as the Mercury reported earlier this month.

Two of the locations, at Suton and Spooner Row, are within the parish of Wymondham. And the town council agreed on Tuesday to arrange a public meeting so people can find out more about the proposals, and give their views. It will be held at 7pm on Friday, September 26 at the Central Hall in Wymondham.

District council officials will give a presentation, and explain exactly what is planned, and the timescale for the consultations which will take place during late September and October.

Town clerk Trevor Gurney said: “The reason we decided to have the meeting at Central Hall is we feel this is an issue that affects the whole of Wymondham, and we would like to encourage as many residents as possible from the parish to come and listen to the presentation, and give their view point.”

He added that South Norfolk Council has produced a summary leaflet, copies of which will be available on the night.

Preferred and reserve sites at Ketteringham have also been proposed, and a district council spokesman said discussions are taking place with the parish council about how best to involve local people in the consultations.

The other sites are at Kirby Cane, whose parish council is holding a public meeting tomorrow night, and at neighbouring Earsham, near Bungay.
