A south Norfolk primary school has been judged a “good school” and praised by Ofsted for its teaching, curriculum and the attitudes and behaviour of its pupils.

The inspector said Hempnall Primary School was “well regarded in the community” and its 87 pupils were “keen to learn”.

Governance was found to be “very strong” and judged to be outstanding. “A good team spirit” was seen amongst staff.

The inspector said: “This is an inclusive, happy school in which pupils' personal development is good. Parents confirm that their children enjoy being there. The school is rightly proud of its family atmosphere.

“Pupils throughout the school make good progress in relation to their starting points. Standards at the end of Key Stage 1 have risen steadily over the past three years and are consistently above the national average.”

Headteacher Miriam Elston said: “We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised our school as a happy and caring place, where pupil enjoyment is high.”

Rachel Hyde-Smith, chair of governors, said: “This report recognises the large amounts of hard work that all the staff have invested. We will continue to build on this and look for opportunities for further improvement during the coming year.

“Our long-awaited building programme will further enable the school to provide an excellent learning environment for the children of Hempnall School.”
