Diss Community Farm celebrates first harvest

Members of a community farm scheme in Diss have benefited from their first harvest after more than 100 people collected basketfuls of locally grown greens.
Green-fingered residents formed the Diss Community Farm earlier this year with a pilot vegetable plot project at Winfarthing.
Members have now reaped the rewards of their first crop after picking up curly kale, spinach and lettuces last Thursday that had been harvested that morning.
The produce is the first of the many planned weekly harvests throughout the summer from the pilot site at Church Farm, Winfarthing, where the planting of winter crops by grower Gabbi Reid is just beginning.
Community farm coordinator Angela Lamb added that the committee was “bowled over” when David Mitchell, owner of the pilot site, offered additional land from July, which will result in a greater variety of crops and seasonal vegetables.
“It is just wonderful to think that our members are now beginning to reap their share in the community farm by way of lots of lovely green and healthy vegetables. This first harvest has been so abundant that members walked away with their baskets and bags crammed full of fresh, locally grown produce,” she said.
The not-for-profit project is looking to secure a permanent site by next year.
A farm open day is planned for Sunday, July 17 from midday at the Winfarthing community farm site, just behind the Fighting Cocks pub.
Events coordinator, Erika Doerksen said: “There’s something for everyone and you don’t need a trowel to join in. The afternoon will be a great opportunity for local people to see what’s been growing on the farm and meet new people over a picnic.”
