In October 2009 11 Sixth Form Students from Diss High school are travelling to Sri Lanka to visit their link school in the village of Jalthara.
The link between Diss High School and Jalthara Maha Vidyalaya, a rural school for 6-16 year olds, was started in 2005 and has grown in strength ever since.
Pupils collected books, games and stationery which were then sent out to the school and many are participating in penfriend activities. Teachers from Diss have visited and taught at the school, while an ex Diss pupil worked in the school for 8 weeks as part of her University degree. Lesson ideas have been exchanged, with both Diss and Jalthara pupils working on linked topics in their lessons.
Diss High School has, as part of its Specialist Schools status, paid for the building of a new classroom specifically aimed at English activities. Pupils meanwhile, fundraised for desks and other equipment.
The positive impact of this project so far can be seen in a rise in English O Level passes at Jalthara from 29% to 62%.
In October the students will take out with them prepared activities and lead some of the Jalthara pupils in a number of lessons and workshops, such as music, dance and sport. During their stay they will also exchange ideas and learn about each other's cultures. On their return to Diss the students will be expected to share their experiences in assemblies, meetings and lessons.
