Firefighters from across South Norfolk were called to a blaze that swept through 20 acres of fields in tinderbox conditions.

Fire crews from Diss, Thetford, Attleborough and Harleston were called to deal with fire in an isolated rural location on Fen Street at Redgrave, near Diss, at 2.40pm today.

Fields of straw and stubble alongside the country lane were ablaze sending a plume of black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles. Firefighters extinguished the fire and prevented it spread using hose reel jets, beaters and small gear.

A spokesman for Norfolk Fire Service said: 'Firefighters across the county continue to work hard to deal with many incidents caused by the hot, dry weather. You can help us to keep you safe by following simple rules; no campfires; no naked flames; do not discard cigarettes; and dial 999 if you see a fire.'
