A scout group has returned from its annual group camp in woodlands just outside Thetford.

‘Sunshine and splashes’ was the theme for this year’s Fressingfield Scout Group event at Thorpe Woodlands.

The scouts managed to miss the rain over their three-day visit - but that did not stop the 80-strong contingent from getting wet with swimming at the Breckland Leisure centre and kayaking along the river as two water-based activities.

The annual camp is an opportunity for the whole Fressingfield Scouting family to come together to share their scouting experiences, from Beavers aged just six to Explorers aged between 14 and 18.

Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne, group scout leader, said: “Our annual camp is one of the highlights of the 1st Fressingfield Scout Group’s year.

“It is great to see the young people, from the smallest six-year-old Beaver Scout to the largest 18-year-old Explorer Scout working and playing together.

“It is also great to see our dedicated team of volunteer leaders, who freely give their time to ensure that our young people get quality experiences that will stay with them forever, also have such a great time.”

The group participated in a range of activities from high ropes and climbing to assault courses and archery. Scouts literally took to the water on kayaks, to the air by hurling themselves from 40ft towers and even explored the underground network of caves and tunnels.

A wide range of games and sports were played late into the evenings, with plenty of hot soup and marshmallows around the camp fire.

Team-building games and skills of knots and lashings were complemented by navigation training on the Sunday.

Friendship and reflection also featured in a packed programme of activities, with a ‘Scouts Own Service’ providing opportunity for investing new members into the group by taking their Scout Promise.

After the three days, leaders said they were left exhausted while the young people were tired but content.

1st Fressingfield Scout Group has a number of leadership role opportunities and would welcome anyone interested in joining the Group as a volunteer leader.

The Group offers free uniform and training and a promise that the journey will be both satisfying and fun. Those interested should contact Mr Aalders-Dunthorne on 07908 262623.
