A lively evening of music will take place when a Diss church hosts the town's annual Big Sing.

This year's event is set to take a nostalgic look at Gerry Hosking's decade of organising the giant sing-a-long at St Mary's Church, with the hymn sheet including songs performed during his time of being involved.

Mr Hosking - famous for wearing a different brightly-coloured 'outrageous' shirt each year - holds a public vote each year so people can choose which songs are performed.

The 67-year-old, of Appletree Lane, Roydon, said the main benefit of the Big Sing - which this year takes place from 6pm on Sunday, August 3 - was 'bringing people together', whether they are regular church-goers or not.

'Many people who come to the Big Sing don't go to church but like to have a sing,' he explained.

'They can see what the church looks like inside and speak to people they have never spoken to before.

'The event has gone from strength to strength. People come from nearby villages and all over.

'It is about bringing people together. It's people coming together from all over the place to sing their favourite hymns.'

Each year the event - which on average attracts about 400 people - raises funds for a charity, with this year's beneficiary being Crossroads Care, which provides support for carers.

A church organist and choir, as well as the Diss Salvation Army Band, play for around half an hour before start of the event.
