HERE is the training programme devised for the Mercury's sponsored runner Jane Jiggens as she prepares for the challenge of Wymondham AC's New Year's Day 10k race.

Jane, from Long Stratton, has had expert help from Wymondham Athletics Club and been kitted out by Norwich sports store Pilch in preparation for her run.

You will be able to find out how she gets on in the Mercury on January 8 and next week we will have details of the big race day.

Remember Jane's running programme has been designed specially for her but it can be used as a guide for other runners hoping to take part.

Monday, December 15 - WAC Club session or 30 minute run; Tuesday, December 16 - Rest day or easy gym session; Wednesday, December 17 - Rest day; Thursday, December 18 - Five minute brisk walk, 25 minute run, 10 minute brisk walk; Friday, December 19 - Gym cardio session or rest day; Saturday, December 20 - Five minute brisk walk, 40 minute run, 10 minute brisk walk; Sunday, December 21 - Rest day.

Always start with an easy walk warm-up, finish with a brisk walk and slow down towards the end, stretch after each run, do not run two days in a row and don't be tempted to do more!
