Diss is bracing itself for a bout of carnival fever this week when dozens of colourful floats take to the streets for the highlight of the town's summer calendar.

Thousands of residents and visitors are set to celebrate the annual procession on Sunday, which this year will have a films and shows theme.

The carnival parade and fun day at the football club is the third since the event was resurrected in 2008 after a gap of about eight years.

And organisers said the festivities were sure to the lift people's spirits with about 30 floats set to be involved when the procession kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday.

Town centre roads will be closed when the parade begins a circular route that will conclude at Diss Town Football Club in Brewers Green Lane from 2pm.

This year's films and shows theme is in tribute to dressmaker and carnival committee member Tracey Soar, who died suddenly in November as a result of a blood clot on the lung. The 45-year-old suggested the carnival theme at the end of last year's event.

Doreen Collins, Diss Carnival co-ordinator, said there had been a good response from community groups wanting to participate in this year's event.

'I think it brings a bit of the feel good factor to the town. It is a community event and at the end of the day we want to bring the community together and the community does get behind it and supports something they enjoy.'

'We have the weather on order, but whether it is delivered is another thing! The parade will happen whatever and we are just hoping for a nice day,' she said.

More than 4,000 people attended last year's fun day at the football club and this year's highlights include stilt walkers, climbing wall, bungee trampoline, children's entertainment from Steve Sausage, and displays from the Black Belt Academy. The Hoxon Hundred will also play in the Market Place from 12.30pm Sunday. The fun will conclude at 6pm and tickets are 3 for adults on the gate and 2 in advance. Entry is free for under 16s when accompanied by an adult.

A free open air proms concert will take place at Diss Park from 6pm on Saturday featuring Norfolk Fellowship Brass and the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band. The music event, organised by Diss and District Rotary Club, will also see the crowning of carnival queen Annabel Oakes, 19. Her attendant will be Anna Farthing, 17.
