The launch of a vegan version of its iconic sausage roll by Greggs caused a national kerfuffle last month now diners in Diss can get a taste of what the fuss was all about.
The meat-free pastry has finally gone on sale at the Mere Street branch as part of a national roll out and is proving popular.
Diss store manager Emma Crane said: “They are going down really well. A lot of people had been asking if they could buy one and when they were coming to Diss since they were launched and in the news. So it has proved to be popular since we started to sell them a few days ago.”
The high street bakery chain, which sells 1.5 million traditional sausage rolls per week, said its vegan version has some “classic features” of the traditional sausage roll, including 96 layers of puff pastry - but instead of meat the filling is made with Quorn. It also contains microproteins and Greggs’ “unique seasoning”, according to the label.
The launch of the plant-based snack hits the headlines when it provoke the ire of some meat-eaters while other customers weren’t happy that it was only being stocked in a limited number of shops.
