People in the Harleston area are being invited to play a part in a crack down on speeding motorists.

The local police safer neighbourhood team is appealing for volunteers to become involved in a community 'speedwatch scheme' following an increase in complaints about the issue.

Speeding motorists in the town and surrounding villages was one of the concerns raised by residents at the last safer neighbourhood panel meeting, and agreed as a priority. To tackle the problem it was suggested a speedwatch scheme should be launched.

This involves training and equipping groups of local residents to take part in speed reduction activities. Letters are sent to the registered keepers of offending vehicles warning them to keep their speed down. And persistent offenders become targets for police enforcement action.

Each team of volunteers will be issued with a 'Speedar' radar, two community speedwatch signs, four reflective jackets and a paper work pack.
