The former offices of South Norfolk Conservative Association could be turned into a house after planners approved a change of use to residential.
Plans were submitted for the large prominent three-storey property on Denmark Street, overlooking Diss Mere, seeking permission to convert it into a single dwelling.
The 1960s building, which sold at auction earlier this year, was also previously used to be the constituency office of South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon but is currently solely occupied by Grasmere Social Club, which has a tenancy until December 2020.
Planning permission was granted in 2009 for demolition of the building to build 14 apartments. South Norfolk Council has now approved the change of use as part of plans that would retain the current structure.
The plan received support including from a neighbour who stated: "I am particularly glad that the view of the Mere from the public footpath on Denmark Street will not be changed, since this is the only window onto this aspect of the Mere for the general public and visitors to our town."
