Inconsiderate motorists are continuing to cause problems in a newly-revamped town centre by parking illegally and causing obstructions.

Diss' Heritage Triangle area was given new road signs and a different layout as part of a £3.4m revamp, which was completed in August last year.

Nine car parking spaces and double yellow lines were also removed to make the area more friendly for pedestrians, even though signs make clear that the parking restrictions remain.

But the changes seem to have caused confusion amongst drivers over the parking rules, with many taking to social media to vent their frustrations.

Sheila Moss King, Heritage Triangle project leader, defended the changes to the street layout and said there needed to be better awareness of the Highway Code.

She said: 'The whole idea of the scheme was to calm the traffic.

'From my perspective, there seems to be a lack of understanding of general parking regulations and the Highway Code, which manifests itself in a significant amount of illegal parking and parking that would be illegal anywhere - for example parking over a dropped curb.'

Mrs Moss King conceded that the project needed time to 'bed in' and for motorists to get used to new road layouts.

However she highlighted particular problems with motorists stopping where there were no parking spaces and illegal use of disabled parking bays.

She said: 'People don't seem to understand the rules of the road. It's about ongoing enforcement and education with Diss Town Council and explaining to people about where and how they can park in the town.'

Deborah Sarson, clerk to Diss Town Council, previously said the authority had conducted an extensive consultation on parking in the area and the decision to remove the car parking spaces in Market Hill 'was not taken lightly'.

'There has been a proliferation of anti-social parking,' she said.

'It has been an issue for a long time but it has been exacerbated since the Heritage Triangle was completed.

'Ignorance is never considered an excuse.

'It's not because the rules have changed – it's because the way we are managing them has changed.'
