MARKETLEADERS:

A 21pc rise in the value of mining company Xstrata helped a team from Attleborough High School outperform the stock market.

The Official Ladies Club, comprising Year 10 business studies students, won the first monthly title in this year's Mercury sister paper EDP Schools Fantasy Shares League.

The team's portfolio included First Group, Moneysupermarket, Hunting, Premier Oil and GlaxoSmithKline, but half of the virtual 50,000 was invested in Xstrata. Overall, the portfolio rose from about 50,000 to nearly 55,500 during February. At the end of the competition, the top team from each school goes forward to the Stock Market Challenge.

The shares league is sponsored by Larking Gowen and Brewin Dolphin and organised by The Exchange, which encourages Norfolk schools and businesses to work together. Mark Curtis, pictured, of Larking Gowen, presented pupils with certificates on Tuesday.
