When Jo Pettitt left her car in its usual spot, she never thought she might have to say: 'Remember where we parked.'

But a vicious snowdrift had soon engulfed her vehicle to such an extent that a casual observer would not have even known there was a car underneath.

The 28-year-old's silver Mazda MX-5 gained notoriety in Pulham Market after photographs showing it covered in snow were featured by this newspaper.

The postwoman had decided to stop using the 10-year-old sportscar on Tuesday, February 27 in favour of a 4x4, so it would be easier to get around in the hazardous conditions.

But with her parking spot next to a field, the car soon became submerged when winds blew copious amounts of snow over her vehicle.

'It got to a point where I thought: 'I can't do anything about it,'' she said.

Once it was completely covered, Mrs Pettitt feared a gritter driver would think it was just a large mound of snow and crash into it.

She said: 'I went out there to try and clear some of the snow on the side off, because I thought: 'What if a digger just never sees the car?'

'I cleared snow off the side, but then we had more snow and it was back to square one.

'I guess it was my fault for parking it there - but you never think you're going to get such high winds.'

The vehicle was eventually freed - but it took Mrs Pettitt and a group of four friends several hours to clear the mounds of snow of the windscreen, roof and bonnet.

They had started by using brooms, but soon found that using the handle to take off pieces of snow in small chunks was a more effective tactic.

Amazingly, the snow has done no lasting damage to the vehicle except for a small chip to the windscreen.

Beck Vale ward councillor Clayton Hudson had joked that the vehicle's owners 'have a little bit of snow clearance ahead of them!' when he photographed the car on Friday.

'It's right next to a field and it shows the effect of drifting snow and that it can soon encompass car,' he said.

'It captures that although we've only had 17cm to 18cm of snow, the wind has had a significant effect.'

Pulham Market has been particularly affected by the snow, as it is just off the A140 - which was completely impassable.

Farmers and nearby businesses stepped in and worked tirelessly during the day and night to try and clear a route so that emergency vehicles could get through.
