South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss championed Norwich City on a visit to the US as part of efforts to woo an American football team to relocate to the UK.
On an official visit to Cleveland, Ohio, in her capacity as chief secretary to the treasury, promoted the hope that an NFL team will move to the UK permanently, the MP presented the owner of the Cleveland Browns with a Norwich City shirt.
NFL games began in the UK in 2007 and more than one million fans have since attended matches. NFL UK is also developing plans to launch an ‘NFL Academy’, an academic and elite athlete pathway for young people to potentially become NFL players.
The MP said: “It has been a pleasure to be able to bring the great name of Norwich to the States and recruit a new supporter. My visit this week is very much about reaffirming our hope that a team will come over to the UK.”
Her presence proved to be a lucky omen as the Browns won their first match since 2016.
