They have watched the pennies all their lives and have yet to afford their own home.

But despite winning almost £4m on the national lottery Stan and Pat Cable have no plans to live a life of luxury.

For a start, neither likes champagne and a jet-set lifestyle is out of the question as Mrs Cable does not like to fly.

A mansion is also off the cards as the pair, who live near Eye, have no plans to move from their rented two-bedroom local authority home where they have lived for nearly 27 years.

Oh and forget that luxury yacht or top-of-the-range sports car because the couple say a new caravan and sofa would suffice.

Indeed, the mention of another East Anglian lottery winner, self-proclaimed King of Chavs Michael Carroll, who has frittered away the £9.7m he won in November 2002, was greeted with a look of horror by retired council ground worker Mr Cable, who said the pair would certainly not be blowing their money on life in the fast lane.

Speaking at a press conference to celebrate their £3,980,528 Lotto jackpot win, the modest couple, who have no children, said they were still in shock after scooping all six numbers from the draw on Saturday, May 17.

They vowed the money wouldn't change them and Mr Cable, 62, said: “We will just have the money to buy what we want now. We don't have expensive tastes and we are quite happy as we are. I might just spend a bit more on a pair of shoes now.”

Mrs Cable, 59, revealed that her husband had taken her to task after she splashed out on a handbag and purse costing £135 at the weekend.

She said: “I went shopping in Norwich on Saturday with my niece and bought a new handbag and purse. But I got told off when I got home because Stan said it was too much!”

Mr Cable continued: “I just said 'What!' I cannot change in five or 10 minutes. We have always had to look after every penny. It is really strange.”

The couple said they would like to spend some of the money on a new caravan and Mr Cable said he would like a 4x4 vehicle to replace his Vauxhall Vectra.

Mrs Cable hopes to get a small car for her 60th birthday in July.

The couple also plan to give some money to their family and, as Mr Cable suffers from diabetes, possibly some money towards a related charity.
