King's Lynn Town got their pre-season off to a winning start with a 4-1 victory at Dereham Town.

Michael Clunan put the Linnets in front from the penalty spot after Leon Mettam had been brought down and that was how it stayed until half-time.Dereham equalised early in the second half through Dan Morphew but former Magpie Toby Hilliard restored the Linnets' lead.

Lee Stevenson made it 3-1 before youngster Dylan Edge completed the scoring on a day which saw midfielder Dan Quigley – beginning his second spell at The Walks after an acrimonious exit in April 2015 following a string of no-shows – pull on Lynn's colours again.

It was the first match summer recruit Mettam had skippered the side. Last season's captain, Sam Gaughran, decided to step down from the role so he can concentrate more on his personal performances.

He said: 'I am 100pc committed to the football club and will still try be a leader on and off the field. I want to really concentrate on my own personal performances and get back to my best and help this great club progress up the football ladder.

'Personally I felt I didn't perform to my capability last season but I have worked hard over the summer to put this right and feel fitter and stronger for this coming season.'

Manager Gary Setchell added: 'I totally understand Sam's decision and have been pleased with the way he has returned to training. It's the fittest I have seen Sam for a long time.

'On Leon it's great to have someone to take over from Sam who is a natural leader and will demand the best from everyone. Hopefully he can take us to the play-offs like he did with Worksop when he was skipper a couple of years ago. Sam will be the vice-captain for Leon.'

Lowestoft continued their pre-season with a 1-0 win over local rivals Kirkley & Pakefield. Ryan Jarvis got the only goal of the game after two minutes when he finished well from a Danny Crow corner.

Trialist Josh Glover once again played in goal for the Trawlerboys whilst Louis Cutajar was involved as he is training with the club to regain fitness.

Diss posted a 2-1 win over Gorleston although the Greens played different XIs in either half.

Adam Burroughs got both goals for the Tangerines in the first half with Liam Brown on the scoresheet for the visitors.
