Across most of Norwich less than an inch of snow had settled - but still dozens of trains on local lines and to London were cancelled and schools closed.

Early morning trains between Norwich and Sheringham line and Norwich and Lowestoft were cancelled and trains on the Norwich to London line were also cancelled or delayed. Most services were up and running by 9am.

First Eastern Counties said their buses were all operating, although may be running late.

On the A11 a lorry jack-knifed on the southbound lane at West Carr Road near Atttleborough, just after 6.30am this morning and yesterday, a number of drivers went off the road as a result of snow and ice.

Police have also closed Thorn Lane in Norwich today due to the icy conditions and roads getting into fakenham from the A1067 towards Fakenham were also covered in ice.

Last night, three outgoing and two incoming flights were cancelled at Norwich International airport after the runway was shut down for two hours from 6pm.

Terminal manager John Dewing said it was 'not looking great' for flights scheduled to fly this morning because of heavy snow expected overnight, but advised passengers to attend the airport anyway.

A spokesman for EDF Energy, which looks after the network, said they were working to rectify the problems but their engineers were being hampered by the weather conditions.

The East of England Ambulance Service warned that roads were 'extremely hazardous' and asked drivers to avoid unnecessary journeys. People were being asked to avoid calling ambulances unnecessarily and to call NHS Direct first if they are unsure.

The freezing temperatures and snowy conditions are expected to last until Tuesday at least . The Met Office's Pat Boyle said: 'East Anglia is really taking the brunt of the snow, it's right in the firing line.'
